I was planning a trip to Hawaii for the first time ever and my friend Shane told me that he was going to be on the island at the same time I was. We had known each other from Instagram and had been messaging each other every so often trying to meet up in different cool places, but it would just never end up happening. So when I found out Shane was going to be on the Island at the same time that I was, I was super stoked! He's a professional photographer who travels all around the world to the most beautiful and exotic locations and used to live in Hawaii, so it was super cool to meet up with someone who knows more about the culture and show me around the hidden back roads. He told me we were going on a helicopter ride to go see the lava flow and my mind was blown.

We made our arrangements and eventually he picked me up from my hotel in Kona and we had a 2 hour drive over to Hilo where we spent talking and getting to know each other a bit. He told me about Pele, the Goddess of land, and how she controls all of the volcanoes and the lava flow. She created all of Hawaii; from the big beautiful mountains, to the small details that make the islands so beautiful. The flowers and all of the greenery, the caves, the valleys, the coastlines, the reefs.... I could go on. My mind was seriously blown by the beauty of the island and it was all created by Pele.

A couple days before the helicopter ride, I went to an art gallery where I met the sweetest local woman who worked there. She was about 30 years old who had grown up in the same house and lived there for her entire life. She had 10 brothers and sisters and was the oldest of them all. Their house was destroyed by the lava flow and I sat and talked to her for an hour listening to her story and was just so inspired by how strong she was. Her entire family was devastated. Despite everything they had being destroyed and losing the home she spent her entire life growing up in, she told us how she was just happy to be alive and that she must stay strong for her younger brothers and sisters, to always keep pushing forward, and to not look back at where everything had once been before the lava came. But to just trust that eventually the beauty will return to the land. This woman had a really beautiful soul and I loved hearing her story and really admired her strength a lot.

As Shane and I are finally taking off on the helicopter, my mind is blown from the view. Hawaii might even be prettier from above but I'm not sure. We finally get to see the lava flow and I kinda just felt like I was in a dream. I was really just taking it all in and couldn't stop thinking about Pele and the lady from the art gallery. Shane had also told me that Hawaiians believe that sometimes Pele will spare people's homes if they had lived by her rules. The lava flow will sometimes be headed straight towards a home, and before impact will split into 2 different ways and make a circle going completely around the houses, leaving them completely unharmed. I was seeing a process of simultaneous creation and destruction of land right before my eyes and it was all just such an incredible experience that I'll never forget.

The views from the helicopter were incredible. The ocean was the perfect shade of blue, and the air blowing in my face as we soared 3,000 feet above the ground was just absolutely insane. As we got closer and closer to the lava you could feel the air getting hotter and hotter, and the helicopter would start bumping around when we would go over the hot air. There was so much lava spewing out of the fissure, and then just a huge river of lava for miles until it reached the ocean where there was so much smoke in the air. After we got back to the ground I was just astonished. I can't wait for our next ESCAPE.
